THANKS, Armin!
As it turns out, it was mostly mangled IMAGEPATH and SHAPEPATH problems,
although changing permissions on images/legend was apparently needed too!

Bottom line:  I have it working on my CentOS5 environment and am now faced
with a decision about WHICH interface will be best for a real-life project!
