Dear Robert, The cities10000eu.shp in pmapper_demodata is saved in UTF-8 encoding. So the samples in search.xml file work with special characters. As workaround you can import the shape file (win1252 encoding) in qgis encoding option set to cp1252 or iso8859-1 and save the shapefile with encoding option set to UTF-8. As shown with the samples the layer section of the mapfile set "LAYER_ENCODING" "UTF-8". In the query configuration section of search.xml set the attribute encoding="UTF-8"
