My teenage granddaughter is a cheerleader. That means she goes to all the
football games at her high school and away games. She also goes to
cheerleading events at other schools. She is in her last year of high
school and she is a mediocre student who prefers to spend her time playing
rather than reading (She says she doesn't have the time - That is too
bad). She doesn't know anything about the "New Deal" (because I asked
her), nor has she any awareness about economic depressions; exploitation
and oppression. It is as-if she just popped out of the womb. There is no
knowledge of the world, geography, politics and nothing at all about
economics and human or animal suffering - only boys and cheerleading and
before that it was gymnastics for her and experienced vicariously by her
mother.
The mother attributes her academic deficiencies to the system, but it
isn't that - and - I know that there are students in the same grade level
in her school and other schools in Florida who have achieved a high level
academic proficiency and will go on to college and universities where they
will also adroitly achieve academic competence. -- Whereas, my
cheerleading granddaughter may go on to become president. BUT, she will
know very little about the New Deal.
I have heard from others that, with exceptions, MOST of this generation
are not really engaged. They are diffident and more hedonistic. After the
baby boomers much of the culture changed. This is a sad indictment if
true.
