ANIMAL RESEARCH

Animal Research is among the most controversial areas of animal use. SEAL
believes that to confine, kill, and harm an unwilling subject is a
violation of that individual's rights and is unethical. Additionally, a
stunning body of evidence suggests that animal research is scientifically
invalid and that its perpetuation has more to do with politics and money
than with knowledge or improving human health. We strongly support
non-animal medical research, which we believe to be both ethically
acceptable and more scientifically advanced.

NYU is notorious for its long history of cruelty, fraud, and waste in
animal research. Ron Wood, an NYU researcher who addicted monkeys to
crack, heroine, and solvents, was the recipient of the Physicians
Committee for Responsible Medicne's 1994 Ignobel Prize for Worst Animal
Researcher of the Year. A campaign by NYU students and animal rights
groups ended Wood's research and resulted in the USDA levying against NYU
the highest fines ever issued under the Animal Welfare Act.

NYU is currently conducting experiments on over 51,000 animals including
dogs, cats, primates, pigs, rodents and rabbits. Their research labs are
at many locations on campus, in buildings such as Main, Brown, Meyer and
the NYU Medical Center.

PAST CAMPAIGNS AGAINST ANIMAL RESEARCH

+ Through demonstrating, leafletting, petitioning, meetings with NYU
administrators, and finally, civil disobedience, a coalition of animal
rights groups, including members of SEAL, ended the transfer of the NYU's
remaining chimpanzees (residing at NYU's LEMSIP lab) to the Coulston
Foundation, the nation's second largest Animal Welfare Act violator in US
history. This campaign culminated with 16 NYU students
occupying President L. Jay Oliva's office for almost 24 hrs until NYU
hesitantly agreed to return the remaining chimps from research.

+ We organized a set of three all-day conferences with speakers from
across the country on all aspects of animal research including its
history, descriptions of current animal experiments, the ethics of
vivisection, questions on its validity, activism agains the animal
industry, and vegan alternatives to the suffering.

+ We cosponsored a debate with VP Bob Berne's Office on the scientific
validity of animal research. Top scientists from both sides showed up and
we kicked ass.

CURRENT CAMPAIGNS AGAINST ANIMAL RESEARCH

+ We are organizing a campaign against primate experimentation at NYU. We
will be acting in coalition with a national group, In Defense of Animals,
to build wide support against the horror and torture of primate
experimentation at NYU in hopes of eventually ending primate
experimentation nationally.
