Hello James:
Certainly, you are not implying that all of the reviews and endorsements
for Professor Balcombe's book are bogus, are you? Why don't you ask
Panksepp why he endorsed Balcombe's book rather than impugning the
endorsement and Dr. Panksepp for a dishonest endorsement.
As for his short comments, perhaps he has changed his position about
animal experimentation? I don't know that but it doesn't negate the value
of this type of exposition. I'm certain also that Professor Balcomb is
presenting a highly subjective analysis because until we can talk to dogs
and cats how are we to know what they are really thinking? I do know
however, as Professor Balcomb knows, that anyone who has animal companions
(and I have always have) that they show emotion and they have feelings and
there has been a ample empirical evidence to suggest that animals can
experience a whole range of pain to pleasure. And, I look forward to
reading the book in May.
I think because we have the great benefit of being able to think about a
whole range of things (everything really) which improves our ability to
survive and reproduce; the entire purpose of our being here at all it is
also perhaps a curse to be able to think about ethics which is something
we make up so we can feel good about ourselves but also having a primary
purpose of insuring our survival but some of us can go against the
inherent genetic nature and try to create a little nurture about
cohabitating peacefully and with some justice - and feeling all right or
better about how we do that in the short time before our metabolism is
extincquished.
