Dear Dr Balcombe:
I agree with your essays (all of them that I have read), which is why I am
looking forward to buying your book when it is released. By the way, I'm
67 and very late in life I decided to become a vegetarian and feel better
about myself for doing so. Maybe I'm a slow learner because I always
resisted even though the idea of being complicit in harming animals always
bothered me. Today I have three Chihauhaus and they are my babies (they
are 3,4 and 2 years old) and they are my good friends who rely on me to be
kind to them. It was my perception which changed mostly because of them
although I always have always had animal companions, but also because of
the very fine film "Witness" which I watched on LINKS TV (via DirectTV)
which convinced me that I can never eat animal flesh again. Maybe it will
help my aging heart also to get off meat but it isn't for that alone that
I stopped eating meat, it was - as a progressive - who is way to the left
on everything, that I also see this as an issue that is progressive - to
do no harm, and to respect all animals and I also owe a great gratitude
for their influence - to Peter Singer, Jay Gould, Richard Dawkins, Matt
Riddley (even though he is too libertarian) and others who taught me much
about life - You see you can still teach an old human something - like
what being human really should mean.
