Dear Hank,
Thanks for getting in touch. I appreciate your drawing attention to my work
at PCRM and letting your subscribers know about my forthcoming book.
I know that many, particularly in the scientific professions, will take
exception to the viewpoints I espouse regarding scientific research,
animal experimentation, and humankind's relationship to animals. Indeed,
if they didn't I/we probably wouldn't be bothered writing a monthly column
titled Beyond Animal Research for PCRM's website (see link below). I see a
chasm between what we now know about animals--their sentience, their
awareness, their experience of life--and how we continue to treat them in
our interests and at their expense. I see a profound moral inconsistency
underlying arguments defending harming and killing animals in laboratory
research, when in the same breath we decry the very idea of
harming/killing humans for similar ends. We should decry both.
One of your readers mistook my training in ethology (animal behavior) for
training in ethnology. I'd be grateful if you could clarify this for your
readers.
Kind regards,
Jonathan
