You are probably right. My memory is not as good as yours, I'm sure, and
it has been awhile since I read anything by him. Dawkins, however is
someone I read often, even picking up his books a second and third time.
With some I must read them more than once but others are much easier and I
think written that way (like pop-science), like his latest tome, the
Ancestor's Tale. What a great book that one is. I will undoubtedly read it
again even though it was so thoroughly understandable the first time - and
entertaining and informative - so I have really slowed down about my
ordering any new books because there simply isn't enough time to read
them. I don't know how you find the time to even listen to Malloy. I had
to choose between Malloy and some others (I like Sam Seder), and decided
to listen to Thom Hartmann and I can't get through everything.
Sorry about that run-on paragraph but I forget to stop. (g). Hartmann is
my favorite. When I first listened to him I didn't like the sound of his
voice and his easy demeanor didn't seem forceful enough for my own manner
but the more I listened to his analysis the more impressed I got. He is
clearly, IMO, the most intellectual of the bunch. In fact I have never
listened to any talk host as informed as he is. He might as well teach;
but that is what he is doing, isn't he? But he isn't as didactic as
Springer tries to be and the two or three times I could force myself to
turn on Springer I kept seeing him on that sleeze show he does and he just
doesn't strike me as anything but a "liberal" leaning opportunist.
Thom is also not a socialist, of course, but he is rational and I have
learned a lot from him.
I have also learned a lot from Dawkins, from Ridley and others. I liked
the book I read about the race between NIH and Celera to get the Human
genome sequenced and the importance of the fruit fly for genetic
experimentation.
I want to keep this short. Like you, I prefer this medium for short screen
fulls of conversation. Many make the mistake of writing a book and trying
to put it into an e-mail. A mailing list is best suited for short one or
two item conversations leaving the WEB for articles and books for book
length indepth analysis (with lots and lots of footnotes <g>).
Best,
Hank
[rest deleted because I didn't have time to comment on it. will later in
another e-mail]
P.S. By the way, I can find time to listen to Hartmann and other things
because I do it when I walk and jog. It is the perfect time for me to
listen and it keeps me exercising for hours at a time. I think now at my
age I probably do a minimum of 3 hours a day of walking/jogging (but I
rarely sprint anymore).. So while exercising my body I am also exercising
my brain <g>.
