(Patrick sent this to me. I believe he meant to send it to pnews-views?)
From: John Patrick <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Hi,

Well, this included things in the first person, using the pronoun "I". With my
name on the byline, that should be sufficient to make it 'views,' and it's not
written in the journalistic form. (At CSN, we also have 'news' and 'buzz'
pages. News tends to be unsigned, and to look like story copy as seen anywhere.
This piece we classified as 'buzz.')

I'm not at all sure that I want to go into a communism-versus-capitalism
argument, my feet are planted in market capitalism, but I realize that (a.) it
could be implemented in a far less corrupt form, such as refusing to purchase
from slave labor. Indeed, there's a category of "blood soaked profits" that, to
me, has no place in upright society; and (b.) there could be a far more
compassionate and human side to a government. Canada is an example. It's still
market capitalism, but it believes in keeping people healthy and on their feet.

So, my feet are planted, but if you are on the other side of the fence, let me
ask you: Under communism, would you and I have the same freedom to choose our
own career / profession? Isn't it a system that has a closed-ended number of
(for lack of a better term) buckets, into which it sorts people? How would
anybody ever innovate to create a new bucket or industry? The work is all
assigned, isn't that true? I would not enjoy a system of enforced mediocrity
that fits everybody into straight jackets of averages, nor requires quotas.

Something like floating exchange rates are one way that the rich get richer and
the poor get poorer. I would prefer a one world currency (but not a one world
government!), because then there would be a level playing field, allowing
people to actually get ahead, even in the poorest countries. But, even with
that adjustment to our world, it would still be market capitalism. (I guess
that my point is to emphasize that I see the short comings of the status quo,
but I also feel there are fixes that do not require us to throw out the baby
with the bath water.)

At any rate, no amount of extolling communism can excuse the religious
persecution that is really the matter behind my piece as submitted. There is a
land, and a religion, of Tibet. China occupied the land, but with the religion
being around the world, troops cannot occupy it. The Dalai Lama is a
spiritual-and-temporal leader, and in the temporal realm, he would be head of
state for the land, prior to its occupation. --That part can be invaded and
occupied, but since when do the world's journalists ascribe to Beijing the
right to rearrange that religion? Beijing is playing its game of an elaborate
ruse, hoax, or deception. Should a clear minded thinker be taken in by these
shenanigans?

/s./ John
