This is from Professor Wolfe's article. By the way, Professor Wolfe was a
long time subscriber here but after he moved to Israel several years ago
he disengaged from most or all mailing lists but occasionally he writes an
essay like this and sends it to me.
He wrote:
"There are two main reasons why a Jewish left is necessary. In the first
place, it exists anyhow because a considerable proportion of people on the
left are Jews. This is particularly true in socialist organizations. We
have all had the experience of sitting in a meeting where half or more of
the people were Jewish and yet no notice whatsoever was taken of this
fact. Given this situation, the issue is not whether to form a Jewish left
but whether to take notice of its existence. And the reason why it is
important to take notice of its existence is because of anti-Semitism.
Even though anti-Semitism in the United States today is, for the most
part, subdued and non-violent, it still exists and manifests itself on the
left as well as the right. Unless Jews on the left organize as Jews, we
will not be able to cope effectively with such manifestations of
anti-Semitism as hatred of Israel or efforts to equate capitalism with
Jews."

I believe labels are now anachronistic. The left has changed so much - and
I have been active in it for over 40 years - so that today I don't
recognize it anymore as anything like what it was in the 50s and 60s.
Something is missing. Attitudes and sensitivity is more narcissistic and
individualistic. The collective is less important to the goals of
progressive change. There has been an increase of antisemitism on the
left. I personally see currents on both the left and right which mirror
the overriding tendency of the bourgeoisie. The proletariat and respectful
tendencies of the progressive movement have practically disappeared as
much as our publications have changed and most of them disappeared or
morph-ed as well. There are much fewer socialists in the left progressive
movement. What is your view?
