Lindy:
I think that is right. If there is life it is meaningful to that life. It
must be. I believe that is imprinted in DNA and/or myth-based cultural
memes and that is what may have saved us 60,000 years ago in Africa when
our particular species was about to go out of existence. I think the need
to save their lives, those 2,000 or so which are our ancestors, all of us,
and why they sought better weather out of Africa which then was a dessert
to the Middle East and Europe and to Eurasia and that imprint is what
sustains life in a very deep and profound way -- and perhaps that is why
also that religion began at all..
Caring about animals is a virtue which you and I share. There is not that
much that is different between animals and us except the way we each try
to survive but we owe domesticated animals a debt for causing them to
change and become dependent on us and we owe non-domesticated animals less
of a debt because they like us are part of the same food chain (and that
is arguable) but caring about their pain is what makes us human and indeed
that is a value we need to curry and maintain.
