My personal opinion is that of Carlyle. Democracy is
only as good as the Demos. "Instead of saying that
man is the creature of circumstance, it would be
nearer the mark to say that man is the architect of
circumstance. It is character which builds an
existence out of circumstance. From the same materials
one man builds palaces, another hovels; one
warehouses, another villas; bricks and mortar are
mortar and bricks until the architect can make them
something else."
I am afraid that consummerism and freedom are not
compatible and that a nation that prefers butter to
liberty will have neither.
The facts of 9/11/01 speak so loudly that of course
psychological repression occurs at once. That a JFK
was gun down means nothing.
That war after war builds profits for munitions makers
means nothing,.
That a Juan Bosch could write a book in l964 called
"Pentagonism: The Highest form of Capitalism" (Mr.
Bosch had been deposed by LBJ of his Presidency in the
Dominican Republic in the largest amphibious assualt
since D-Day) in which he obviously points out that the
Pentagon and Corporate Capitalism symbiotically depend
on one another to loot the public purse means even
less.
Americans are ignorant of the history of their nation
and this ignorance is lethal.
