I use the "convert" command and a basic application to
convert from BMP to PNG in order to use the
pngwriter-library, it use the ImageMagick and is able
to convert without options from other formats (not
just bmp) to PNG.

The stub is at:
http://www.geocities.com/gengiskanhg.geo/GFDL/bmp2png.gz

After I create this, i realize that the same can be
done with a simple BASH command line including
convert.

I hope this will be and aid for you.

For png to other formats the convert command can be
used. But remember than jpg and png have diferent
goals, if you store photos use jpg and if you need
graphics images use png.

I am not an expert, but maybe I can contribute in
something to the community.
