I downloaded the link, but it's apparently a Linux executable, and
I'm currently on OS X. :-)
In any case, the procedure you describe is pretty much how I
recommend people to go about feeding other formats to PNGwriter. I
think ImageMagick is available for other platforms as well.

For png to other formats the convert command can be
used. But remember than jpg and png have diferent
goals, if you store photos use jpg and if you need
graphics images use png.
