For reference. This issue was solved by upgrading to CMake 3.6.1 and using 
CMakeLists.txt from 0.9.4 as it should have been. Looks like issue was related 
to PNG libraries which is shown as being optional, but is not.

you replied only to me, not to the list, accidentally? Please reply to the list 
instead.

By the way, the CMake generates a log and an error log, which you can read to 
see what went wrong. it's usually shown also above the "vague error", if you 
use the command line cmake, not the GUI. Replacing the file from 0.9.3 is 
wrong, from my point of view. Again, it depends on the exact error message 
CMake produced. (I may repeat this paragraph to your list reply once you'll do 
that.)
