People generally consider the idea of splitting the mailing list as premature, so I'm treating it as rejected for the moment.
Two ideas emerged from the discussion: 1. Starting a second list for general discussion would be minimally disruptive to the existing list. 2. Splitting the list into two (or more) and aggregating them under the existing list would also work swimmingly.
