We have successfully used POI for creating simple Word Documents and FOP for creating
PDF documents.

hi everyone..
we are using POI/java to create .XLS files in a unix environment with good
success.
can we also use POI/java to generate a .PDF file from the .XLS file?
our preference is to remain in a unix environment.
if POI is not the answer - can someone point me to alternatives? again our
preference is to work in java in a unix environment.
