I dont think merged regions were in that code when I last looked 
(12/2002).  The XML serializer has been planned to move back under the 
POI umbrella.  Andy has some ideas on a new XML-based report generator 
if you're interested in an XML format (the gnumeric format hurts the 
eyes a tad).
