I've seen this behaviour with Firefox when it reaches one
of its connection limits (or believes it does). Some of
its limits only apply to proxy connections which might
explain why you don't see the problem with direct connections.

You could try checking with netstat to see if there are any
connections open between polipo and Firefox.

Increasing the connection limit in question might work around
or solve the problem (depending on whether or not the limit
is actually reached).

As polipo continues to work with other clients while Firefox
doesn't, I think it's unlikely that it's a polipo issue.
