Gaar is having severe withdrawal symptoms; he cannot come to grips with the fact the “American dream” was founded upon the expansion and domination of US military power after WWII. Gaar believes the US has been a shining beacon that has bought freedom and democracy to the whole world. He doesn’t believe that there have been any qualitative changes in living standards and in American foreign policy. For Gaar the dream is still alive and well.
