*Mainstream Media wakes up and smells the scandal*

How's that for a Foggy Bottom Theater of Scandal comeback?

Benghazi and the cover-up of the cover-up has been revived. The scandal
has new life. (And despite evidence to the contrary, the White House is
still trying to blame the CIA for it's own transgressions.) With all luck
sooner or later some one of the triumvirate of the foreign policy by
pulling rabbits out of a hat (O-man, Hillary or our Val pal) will find the
escape hatch on the back door of the scandal box is blocked by an email or
some other electronic record.

Well, while we are waiting for the feature presentation, hopefully coming
soon to a Congressional Hearing chaired by Rep. Darrell Issa who knows
drama like no other man in Washington, it's time for a reality check on
what has happened to not just the American "news" media as it relates to
this affair and the Obama administration in general, but the subpoena power
of Congress.

*Lesson one: Answering Congressional subpoenas allows for a whole lot of
redacting. Answering Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests by
non-profit government watch dog groups does not.*

One of the most shocking aspects of the Benghazi scandal revival is that
Judicial Watch was able to get their hands on unredacted email chains from
Obama administration officials generated the night of the Benghazi attack
and Congressional committees requesting the same information via subpoena
were not. And if they did, the emails were redacted to the point that no
sender or recipient were identified.

The same goes for emails pertaining to Susan Rice's prep for the Sunday
morning talk shows. (One of these was the one with the "smoking gun" on
how a video being the cause of the attack in Benghazi got into the talking
points. Where that concept really came from hasn't surfaced yet.)

The one place where such an email was actually received by Congressional
staffs - and was released Thursday by Rep. Jason Chaffetz - that has enough
information in it to sink the video story came from a State Department
staffer. Sharyl Attkinson has the
details<http://www.sharylattkisson.com/state-dept.-al-sharia-email--may-1--2014.html>at
her site. The damning passage is:

The email is entitled “Libya update from Beth Jones. ” Jones was
then-Assistant Secretary of State to Hillary Clinton. According
to the email, Jones spoke to Libya’s Ambassador at 9:45am
on Sept. 12, 2012 following the attacks.

“When [the Libyan Ambassador] said his government suspected
that former Qaddafi regime elements carried out the attacks,
I told him the group that conducted the attacks—Ansar
Al Sharia—is affiliated with Islamic extremists,” Jones reports
in the email.

Oops.

*Lesson Two: Fox News is a legitimate news-type agency.*

For years, we have heard from all manner of self-described judges and
juries that Fox News is not "legitimate." This has come from all corners
of the establishment media, the left, the Obama Administration, etc. In
the beginning, when it was a fledgling network, perhaps that label was
appropriate, but no longer. Fox is one of the big boys - and the only one
of the big boys to maintain any kind of credibility reporting this
particular scandal.

After the emails were released this week - an event likened to the
discovery of the Watergate tapes by Charles Krauthammer - all other
alphabet soup news agencies had to admit that Fox was correct all along:
There is definitely THERE there.

(When push came to shove against this administration, ABC, CBS, NBC and CNN
would not move unless Fox was included. They do deserve credit for that.)

*Lesson Three: When the Obama administration offers up a sacrificial lamb
or scapegoat, it's a trap*

Last month, when former Deputy Director of the CIA Michael Morell
*offered*to testify before a congressional committee in regards to the
CIA's
involvement in the talking points fiasco, there was a palpable excitement
in the air even we in the midwest could feel. Here it was, the moment
there would be answers on Benghazi. AND, not only that, the White House
had said that the blame the video concept had come from "intelligence".
(That there has been a really awful tension between this White House and
the CIA never came up in the reporting.)

One thing to remember about CIA guys - they are loyal to the CIA. Another:
they are REALLY smart, and are not going to get trapped. Mike Morell may
have been less than forthcoming in previous testimony about how the whole
development of the talking points happened from his perspective, but last
month he came pretty clean confessing a lot of stuff that sparked
incredulity among reporters and feigned outrage from Republican
congresscritters who really tried to look tough and forgot ask him why "a
protest and an attack wouldn't be considered mutually exclusive." (Was
anyone else yelling at the TV?)

At any rate, Morell was used as a scapegoat and he wasn't going to stand
for it, regardless of what he had or had not done. The unfortunate thing
is that a whole lot of Washington fell for the meme, trying to blame him
for the final form of Susan Rice's script, and as the White House emails
made pretty clear, he wasn't the final author and the video idea did NOT
come from intelligence, even if he did take out the stuff about the state
department ignoring CIA warnings (which is most prudent during a turf war,
and yeah, that seemed to be the case).

*Lesson Four: The internet and email, like diamonds, are forever (not
apologizing to DeBeers for that)*

Yes, it's that little thing called the time stamp that so many of us in
office situations have used to CYA ourselves. It is automatically
generated by email programs and really not erasable, unless the programming
is altered. With backup systems, and so many people on email chains,
getting rid of any trace of incriminating evidence is near impossible.

*This is why fictional characters go to the park by the Jefferson Memorial
to share information in movies and TV shows about Washington. No one can
prove the conversation happened.*

It's a sign of a true amateur that such evidence is not only easy to come
by, but redacted. This group in the Obama administration is amateurish if
they thought they could get away with writing emails and and redacting the
evidence. It doesn't work that way. And no going back on what was said,
denied, lied about or anything else. It's on video, and even if YouTube
scrubs it, there's a cache somewhere.

And so the cover-up of the cover-up is the new twist in the Benghazi
production of the Foggy Bottom Theater of Scandal. Far from being close to
over, all we know at this point is that the White House put the "blame the
video" concept in Susan Rice's talking points for the Sunday morning talk
shows the weekend after the September 11, 2012 Benghazi attack. Some of
what has been revealed is enough to file criminal charges if it can be
determined who the decision makers were on information releases, but there
is a lot more to discover. We do not know:

   - What Chris Stevens was doing in the desert that night
   - Who gave a stand-down order to special forces, troops, AFRICOM, and
anyone else who was on standby and waiting for the order to help
   - Who decided to blame the video
   - Where Obama was as the attack was unfolding
   - What Hillary knew and when she got word to start spreading the video
   message

And a whole lot more.

Stay tuned. Sooner or later the media is going to realize that the talking
points are just the tip of the iceberg.
