Barry Hazle Jr. spent 2006 in a Shasta County jail for possession of methamphetamine. He was released on parole with the condition he attend a 90-day drug treatment program, according to court documents. Hazle made repeated requests to be placed in a secular program when he discovered the one he was in "required him to acknowledge a higher power," but he was denied. When the treatment centre reported he was "disruptive," his parole was revoked and he was put back in jail for 100 days.
