[image: Description: cid:[email protected]] *WASHINGTON, DC (KCRG-TV9) -- *As the Islamic State continues to claim deadly attacks around the world, lawmakers on Capitol Hill are looking to combat the growing influence of terrorist groups on the web. The 'Combat Terrorist use of Social Media Act' passed through the House in December but is still awaiting a vote in the Senate. The bill passed with massive bipartisan support as groups like ISIS continue to utilize social media to garner support and plan attacks. "When you find out that your mortal enemy is utilizing an avenue to do you in and to kill you, you better pay attention,” said Congressman Hal Rogers (R-KY). Congressman Rogers says this bill should’ve been passed years ago. Former CIA Operative and computer science major Congressman Will Hurd (R-TX) says the Islamic State's unprecedented use of social media is only growing stronger; when one account closes, another opens up. "This increases their surface area of attack,” said Hurd. Congressman Rogers says he understands that this method of combatting terrorism is difficult when the internet is meant to be a forum for the free exchange of ideas. "The privacy of the internet is certainly a tough nut to crack, and it’s going to be tough to come up with a way to protect your privacy while we get at the people who are utilizing the social media for bad things,” said Rogers. The bill requires the President, among other things, to analyze the effectiveness of terrorist social media and train law enforcement to combat the practice in the United States and abroad. "If they’re trying to incite folks here in the United States of America and they’re trying to engage and contact folks in the United States of America, that gives us an opportunity to engage with them and figure out who their recruiters are, who their operational leaders are, what their tactics, techniques, and procedures are.” The bill is currently sitting in the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs – it’s expected to be voted on in the coming weeks. __._,_.___ ------------------------------ Posted by: "Beowulf" <[email protected]> ------------------------------ Visit Your Group <https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/grendelreport/info;_ylc=X3oDMTJmb3VtZDQ1BF9TAzk3MzU5NzE0BGdycElkAzIwMTk0ODA2BGdycHNwSWQDMTcwNTMyMzY2NwRzZWMDdnRsBHNsawN2Z2hwBHN0aW1lAzE0NTI4OTk3MTM-> - New Members <https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/grendelreport/members/all;_ylc=X3oDMTJnb2xvY2xuBF9TAzk3MzU5NzE0BGdycElkAzIwMTk0ODA2BGdycHNwSWQDMTcwNTMyMzY2NwRzZWMDdnRsBHNsawN2bWJycwRzdGltZQMxNDUyODk5NzEz> 1 [image: Yahoo!
