All over the country the newspapers and magazines have reported how thrilled black people have been over the final electing of one of their kind to be president of the US. . . stories of mothers and daughters crying with delight, others jumping and shouting, crowds gathering to celebrate . . . Personally, I am glad he won the election and have great admiration for him. But even so, the seeming race-reaction is, in a perverse way, a sort-of racism in reverse and could end in a destructive downtrend in racial relations.
Here is how: we all know how the media likes to ridicule and criticize the president of the US. The media is considered as “white.” Of course, for months and perhaps a whole year, he may will do no wrong, but when you look at the impossible tasks ahead, he cannot even do the right thing without alienating one group after another. For example: he has promised to curb special interest power. Congressmen depend upon the special interests to supplement their otherwise low wages. Their salaries are kept low because the public is so disgusted with “politics” that it fights ever effort our legislators have ever made to keep their salaries up with the cost of living. So, they depend upon special interest “campaign contributions” and other perks. If he alienates them, he cannot get his legislative programs through Congress. Another example: he promised to deal with the medical insurance problem, but there are not enough doctors. People do not want to become doctors because their lives are filled with paperwork, malpractice suit fears, and having to have too many patients in order to pay for office staff. More doctors commit suicide than in any other profession. To reverse all the paperwork needed, remove the malpractice liability hazard and attract in more students into medicine would mean reversing all the popular “remedies” the government had created to protect privacy, right of redress (malpractice), insurance work, etc. Also, there are not enough nurses for many of the same reasons there are too few doctors. How can you provide medical care for everyone if there are not even enough doctors and nurses to deal properly with just those who can afford medical insurance or whose medical insurance is already paid for by the government? Still another example: he has spoken out against Iran and its nuclear program. Israel is more concerned about that than we are. Iran shows no willingness to stop its program, and if the President is not able to make Iran turn from its course, Israel will bomb Iran's nuclear facilities. The only way to prevent a nuclear arms race within Islam is to remove nuclear arms from Israel, and no president can even suggest such a solution even though we alone are certainly able to provide Israel with security considering that we have some 15,000 nuclear weapons ourselves! And if Israel bombs Iran, our policy of supporting Israel will inexorably lead to us helping her and bombing Iran also. Still another: Is it really possible to win in Afghanistan, even with more troops? How can we find more troops if we cannot take them from Iraq---and if we go to war against Iran, their fellow Shiites in Iraq will turn against us and our troop numbers there will need to climb again, not drop. Even if we do find enough troops to double our numbers in Afghanistan, is that war really win-able? It is not a flat plane of cities and towns like Iraq. It is a mountain wilderness filled with tough tribesmen who see we failed to build up their country after the Taliban were defeated and humiliated. Since we failed the country, they the all started growing opium plants again. Finally, the prestige lost by the defeat of the Taliban was gone. Their “Cause” of national liberation has enabled them to regain their lost status. If they can kick out the Russians, they figure they will fight until they kick us out too. Perhaps the only way to keep from losing in Afghanistan is to keep sending more troops. Ultimately, President Obama would have to reinstitute the draft in order to provide them. How popular would that make the President then? Next to final example: there are people starving in Tahiti and in the Congo right now. How can the new president give them adequate help without making it look like he is helping only black people? Should he become concerned about the starving people in Ceylon and North Korea just to lend balance to his program? But what about the growing poverty here in the US and across the world? Who can the President afford to neglect? Lastly, all this does not even include the economic debacle we are now in! How can he please the conservatives cultists who believe government should have no regulatory role in the economy but who tolerate big government subsidies for the sugar, peanut, corn growing and other agricultural interests? Each time he helps the banks, spends new funds to subsidize the mortgage holders and makes more stimulus packages, he alienates one or the other interests and increased the hate-him animosity level. Personally, I am impressed with President-elect Obama and wish him will, but I consider it inevitable that he will end up being hated by large segments of the population before the end of his first term. On top of all that, consider what would happen if he were to be assassinated! It would throw this country into the worst form of despair and turbulence imaginable.
