I think that Mike may just be quite correct,about the Bush ancestors. If you check a book by Bill Stevenson "a man called Intrepid, and Intrepid's last case" there was a strong case to believe that the US might not be a reliable ally against Hitler. In fact had the UK fallen in 1941, the plan was for the US to concede to Hitler, (check out Phreedom's maps) with the Empire falling to the third Reich. That was one of the threats that arose from the marriage of Wallace Simpson to the then King Edward VIII. Apart from the constitutional problem that she was twice divorced (which would result in the King's excommunication at the time) she was also a Nazi Sympathizer. It was George VI, and Churchill, and Roosevelt who forsaw the threat that Hitler presented, and it was their actions which ensured that the UK would not capitulate. A large part of the funding for that came from discretionary funds held by the British monarch. What really changed the course of WW2, was the attack on Pearl Harbour, which forced the US into the war, by the fact that they were declaring war on an AXIS power, (Japan). The level of influence that Hitler had with Tojo was then questionnable. Churchill and Roosevelt knew that the americans would become involved. British interests in the Pacific, were extensive, and the day after Pearl Harbour, Hong Kong was attacked, and failed. What they had agreed was that the threat in the Pacific was far less, and particularly if Hitler were to be neutralized first.
