Problem solved. I came to the conclusion last night that it had to be malware. I ran a full system scan and it was detected and quarantined. As an aside: I use AVG 8.0. No noticeable other effects or slowing down was noticed while infected. As these things go; it really wasn't all that bad, just annoying and stealthy.
