The Annointed One, Hamas refuses to recognize the right of the Zionist State of Israel to exist. It never claimed it wanted to eliminate the Jewish people. Hamas leaders and spokesmen make a very clear distinction between Zionists and Jews. If anyone can obtain evidence of Hamas denying the right of Jews to live in peace and security on LEGALLY OWNED land anywhere in the world- let them come foreward. It is the Zionist state with it's aparthed policies which steals land, water, and natural resources from one group of people (the Palestinians) and gives it to new comers to the land (the Israelis) that Hamas objects to, as should any fair minded person. Nobody was against Jews who came to the Palestine peacefully, bought property and settled permanently. It was only when the Zionist death squads (during British rule) started terrorizing and killing the inhabitants of whole towns (look up "Massacre at Dir Yassin") and the British "gave" Palestine to the Zionists that the cycle of bloodshed started. The genocide and ethnic cleansing at the time paved the way for the establishment of the State of Israel. If this happened in your homeland, you would be against the state which was established on your home or farm too. You also would refuse to recognize its right to exist. A truly democratic state would do away with the oppressive Israeli government and a new nation would be established which would include all people, regardless of faith, and with equal representation- AFTER the Palestinian refugees return to their towns, and fair distribution of land and wealth- AFTER stolen property is returned to its owners. However, would the Israelis accept such a fair and democratic solution? The Zionist State can not thrive without its system of Apartheid. It cannot thrive if land and water resources were distributed equally and fairly to all the inhabitants. It can only thrive by continued systematic theft of more Palestinian land and building of more settlements on such stolen land. So isn't doing away with Israel and replacing it with a true, all inclusive democracy better for all concerned? Historians agree that for nearly one thousand years under Muslim rule, people of all faiths living in the Holy Land- Muslims, Christians, AND Jews- had equal protection of civil and religious rights. Persecution of other faiths has only occurred under Crusader (not synonymous with Christian) or Zionist (not Jewish) rule. All three religions coexisted peacefully. It was only when the Ottoman Empire collapsed and the British took over after WWI (and promised to "give" the Zionists the land of Palestine-a land which was not theirs to give) that the bloodshed started. c It can therefore be seen that peace in the Middle East is not impossible. It was actually achieved for long spans in history. It may also be seen that Religion is not the cause of conflict in the Middle East. For many orthodox Jews concede the acts of Israel are inhuman and should not be condoned. Furthermore, Islam has very clear laws regarding protection of life, property, and freedom of worship of people of all faiths living within a community. And the reason I think Hamas should be negotiated with is that they are honest, abide by the above code, and always honor their agreements (despite Israeli claims, the facts are undeniable that all three ceasefires Hamas had with Israel were broken by the Israelis). Their respect for civil liberties had even Secular muslims and Christains voting for them in 2006. And by the way, Hamas leaders are not professional military people. They are Doctors, professors, and teachers who have taken up arms to fight for their country (much like the revolting American men and boys in the American War of Independence).
