The pageant was turned into a referendum on gay marriage, Rig. But when the ploy backfired, they then tried to turn it into a public crucifixion. That backfired, too - primarily because Ms. Prejean proved to be no bimbo, with or without her clothes on.
The beauty of the result is that Miss California refused to put out for the Donald, and he still couldn't fire her. In fact, she had him by the balls, left him no choice but to save as much of his face as he could. And he looked pathetic in the unfamiliar role as public loser. So of course the good lady Victoria, i.e. two-shoes-Moakler, was outraged - from the start, and especially in retrospect.
