Well said Mark. I have challenged a number of members here in the Group to produce any record, document, or data that shows where any Muslim cleric, Imam, Grand Mufti, or any individual who who holds Islamic tenets and beliefs, has spoken out against the fundamentalists that now control the theocratic ideologies of Islam. The bottom line, is that Islam has not reformed like Judaism and Christianity has on countless occasions, and although Islam is relatvely modern as compared to Christianity and Judaism, Islam is still caught up in the 11th and 12th Centuries.
To define and describe Islam as a peaceful religion is not at all accurate. Islam's roots are well documented, originating with a supernatural experience in a cave that left a young Mohammad with the firm belief that the archangel Gabriel had summoned him to be God's messenger on Earth. Islam in and of itself, was born in violence. Not only did the angel allegedly try to choke Mohammad to death at one point, so did his tribe, the "Quraysh". >From its very inception, Islam (according to Aiesha, Mohammad's 11 year old wife, and written in Haddith, 5:23; and Akbar, the best translation is "surrender") has been about a fight to survive. Mohammad called this principle "Jihad", and drew two distinctions. Ultimately the greater jihad, "Jihad al Akbar", was the struggle to perfect oneself, the struggle to be a better person in the eyes of Allah. But I opine more importantly according to Mohammad, was the lesser jihad, "Jihad al Asghar" – the struggle to defeat infidels, non-believers and opponents who threatened the faith. The events we are seeing in Iran are nothing different than any other brutal regime attempting to keep in check its population, such as Tiannamen Square in China, the Soviets in Poland, Hungrary and East Germany in the middle of the 20th Century. Folks forget how at one time, Muslims lived a fairly western lifestyle in what is now the former Yugoslavia. Today, if you were to visit that region, *e.g*.; Kosovo, Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, the Republica Srpska; and see the ethnic cleansing.....Not the ethnic cleansing purportedly by Slobodan Milosevic and the Serbs, but by fellow Muslims, those that are both Sunni and Shia. Those that are more "orthodox" Muslims are in fact killing those Muslims who have adopted what many perceive as a "moderate", western way of life! Those that interpret the Q'uoran literally have no use for "moderate" Muslims, anymore than they do for infidels, which encompasses the majority of the world.
