Dick, good questions, really. The Aramaic Bible came from the Peshitta Manuscript found in India and was translated by Dr. Lamsa who grew up in a small village in Syria where they still speak Aramaic. Mel Gibson in his movie, "The Passion of the Christ" had all the actors speak in either Latin (Roman soldiers, etc.) or Aramaic. They called the central character "Yashua", meaning "God with us." Immanuel, the Hebrew name, has the same meaning. Isaiah foretold that he would be called Immanuel, did he not? The Lamsa version has different versions of some of the verses due to errors made in the other versions. The NIV has different phrasing than the KJV and so on. As for Giovanni and John it would be like Ricardo, Richard, Rick, Dick, Dik, they all mean the same..."a strong leader". Jesus does not have the same meaning as Yashua or Immanuel. We may as well call him Billy-Joe-Bob for that matter. Or does his true name have any import? Dik
