Does not even imply that Gates IS one... only that on that day at that time he acted like one. Living in rural CR and having more than a few banana trees I do know what a "banana eating jungle monkey" acts like. Normally Howlers are very serene beasts that simply lie around in the trees most of the day, they do LOVE bananas. Have you ever tried to climb a banana tree ?? Obviously not. They bend and bow and do all sorts of things that "normal" trees containing the other fruits that monkeys love do not. It requires that enough of the family unit climbs the tree to get it to break or bow enough to get the ristra to the ground. There is a lot of gentle fighting for position, frustrated screaming and and constant scratching (there is a kind of black ant that lives in these trees and they bite really hard). The whole ordeal is very disturbing to the normal tranquility of the area and out of character for 99.9% of the normal status of the monkeys. The whiteface monkeys are even worse as they weigh far less requiring even more of them in the tree. To have said this about Gates is in reality (whether or not the author knew it) a really good description of non-normal behavior that can be found in us all at one point or another. You are welcome to come to my home, sit on the terrace with a nice Hefeweizen and see for yourself......
