Quoted from another blog - Dave replied - United States of America - 308,056,000 (that's 12.3% of China and India combined, 4.5% of the World Population) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_population
Unless you don't believe that CO2 emissions are related to population, the United States is a pretty small part of this CO2 problem. I'll even go so far to say - if the United States stopped emitting CO2 from now on, the World would still be producing 95.5% of the CO2 it is today (100% - 4.5% = 95.5%). herman replied - There's a chance (said very dryly) factors in addition to population contribute to a nation's CO2 emissions - so I'm not about to sign on to your claim that the U.S. plays a "pretty small part" in the CO2 emission problem. You obviously did not watch the 2008 Beijing Olympics on the television. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJ1IhtW6y2M I'll even go so far as to say that currently, the United States with it's wealthy population and anti-pollution laws, has a lower CO2 emission rate then poorer countries with the same size population. (I also bet we drive more hybrids then those poorer countries also.) So I feel even stronger now that if the United States stopped emitting CO2 from now on, the World would still be producing 95.5% of the CO2 it is today (100% - 4.5% = 95.5%). -- Thanks for being part of "PoliticalForum" at Google Groups.
