The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary. -- H.L. Mencken

Why the nationwide hysteria over the Nigerian would-be bomber? If some disgruntled ex-employee had attempted to burn down a business building with hundreds of innocent people in it, the horrifying incident would be fodder for Nancy Grace, but most people–aside from deploring criminal activity–would not be hysterical. Nor could the government get away with a war on arson involving body searches of everyone who comes near a business building. Terrorist attacks are seen as attacks on the government. That is the reason for state and state-media delirium. Want to end such attacks? More covert and open warfare is exactly the wrong thing. Bring the boys home. Stop running a foreign policy that makes people want to bomb our airliners. One is safe on Swedish or Swiss planes, after all. Neutralism=security. Empire=horror. Of course, it is pure evil to attack a Northwest airliner because the US military and CIA have killed so many thousands of civilians in your part of the world. But just as Americans cheered the killing of innocents in Iraq and Afghanistan (though there, really, is no innocent gook to the booboisie or the neocons), foreigners can do very bad things in retaliation, as they see it. So let’s stop murdering them. As Ron Paul has long said, we need a foreign policy that adheres to the Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. That is the path to peace.
