Just like the scene in Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, where Mr. Deeds comes to believe everyone is out for his inherited fortune for purely selfish reasons; but the farmer getting tossed off his land tells him off good that makes Mr. Deeds have an epiphany...that he's giving money to people who don't need it.
