I think you are reading this wrong. It is the "progressives" who
worship the state, not the conservatives and therefore the story is far
more pertinent to the "progressives" than it is to the conservatives.
The conservatives want to keep the state out of their affairs and have
the freedom to build their own future while it is the "progressives" who
are all for control by the "nanny" state. The story sounds right to me
in that the "nanny" state ( that which President Obama is working so
hard to implement along with the pet Democrats who are supported so well
by people like Soros, Peter Lewis, Michael Moore, Kerry's wife through
the Tide Foundation) has shown us what a failure it is. Now we have a
good chance of getting rid of it and we will be all the better the
sooner it is gone.
Our citizens need to be left alone to plot their own lives, not the
lives that our "betters" from Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Berkeley think we
should live. Ever since we got stuck with the "Brain Trust" from
Kennedy that messed us up in Vietnam these "betters" have been a plague
on the country. We should tell them to "begone" as soon as possible. I
find it interesting that the parts of the country that are doing the
best are the parts outside the areas that our "betters" poison with
their presence, especially California which has 2 of the most
pestilential parts of the equation in Stanford and Berkeley.
What we need now are people who actually have a life experience away
from the ivory towers and the perpetual government office holders to
leaven the mix with common sense, a sense that is definitely missing in
the people we see in DC and the government offices in the blue states.
Their life experience and common sense when applied to what we are stuck
with from our "betters" sounds like something that would actually work
to the good of the country. We have far too many people telling us
what we cannot do to solve the huge problem of spending and not enough
telling us what we can do to solve that problem. Thanks to the common
sense of the Republican House and Senate President Clinton was able to
end up with a balanced budget for a time. Then we lost our way and that
carried through for a couple of years. Bush was starting to get a
handle on it and then the Pelosi/Reid House and Senate arrived and
voila, the deficit tripled in 4 years. Now that we got rid of the
Pelosi House and hopefully the Reid Senate in 2012 we again have a
chance to maybe balance the budget and start paying down the deficit.

Although the story's librarian character is himself a Bible reader,
it's less to do about God or religion as it is about the dangers of an
omnipotent State.
The Bible is merely the vehicle used to drive to the stories
conclusion.

Once the Chancellor escapes death, he himself is considered an
embarrassment to, and obsolete to The State.
All too willing to replace him so that they may continue to evoke fear
into the hearts of all who oppose The State.
