In a groundbreaking judgment, the Supreme Court has permitted "passive euthanasia" of withdrawing life support to patients in permanently vegetative state (PVS) and in doing so; it has joined a handful of countries which have legalized mercy killing in some form or other. However, India has clearly snubbed active euthanasia of ending life through administration of lethal substances.
