Have you lived long enough to notice how the whole political climate has shifted much to the Right since the great depression? It happens to be a characteristic of civilizations to gradualy return to the old faith and other conservatism when the divided ideology that bonds it together divides into splinters and grows weak. People then turn back because others become disollute, materialistic, addicted and generally less moral. People feel regressing back is "the only way to save us."
They happen to be wrong, however, in that mankind cannot go backword for long. We have to move foreward. The world's population keeps growing and we get more and more crowded and press more and more on the Earth's diminishing resources. We cannot retreat from such problems. As with us always in the whole course of human civilization, when things get this bad, we adopted a new world-view and way of thinking, one that united us and enabled us to cooperate together and build a new civilization---in other words, to move foreward, not backward. Yes, it has happened often. A good exampe is when monotheism replaced the old polytheism of Ancient Rome and brought us Western civilization. Now, it is time to, in turn, replace monotheism, replace it with non- theism. We are now in the stage where such a new world-view and way of thinking is being shaped, one that promotes birth-control to limit overpopulation, promotes racial equality, provides a better set of moral standards, promotes science, and is dedicated to the colonizing of space. brough at civilization-overview dot com -- Thanks for being part of "PoliticalForum" at Google Groups.
