If there was ever a reason to stop gun control, we now have a perfect example. In broad daylight, a self-identified Muslim shouting ‘Allah Akbar’ and an accomplice repeatedly stabbed and tried to behead an off-duty soldier in front of dozens of passers-by. What could they do? They were unarmed. Someone with a gun could have shot the men at a safe distance.**** The gun v. sword scene in *Raiders of the Lost Ark* comes to mind.**** Weapons are not the problem. If people want to murder, they’ll find a way. If a gun isn’t available, a couple of meat cleavers and knives will do the job.**** I was talking with my company’s cinematographer about sweeping landscape shots, and I mentioned the masterfully shot film *Shane* (1953) that stars Alan Ladd (Shane), Van Heflin (Joe Starret), Jean Arthur (Marian Starrett), and Jack Palance (Wilson).**** There’s a scene in *Shane* where Shane and Marian have a short discussion about guns:**** *Marian:* “Guns aren’t going to be my boy’s life.”**** *Shane:* “A gun is a tool, Marian, no better or worse than any other tool. . . . An axe, a shovel, or anything. A gun is as good or bad as the man using it.”**** The exchange begins at the 1:37 mark. Watch the entire 2-minute clip. And if you haven’t seen the film, you need to in the widescreen version.**** As we learn, a gun was necessary for defense against a hired gunman (Palance), otherwise the settlers would have been driven off their land.**** Great Britain has strict gun control laws. Advocates of gun control believe that these laws cut down on violence and crime. Such laws only empower lawbreakers.**** The 2011 riots in London indicate that lawless people will use any means at their disposal to force their wills on others. Three men were killed by an automobile, people were openly beaten in the streets, and business establishments were looted while others were burned. Store owners had no way of protecting their property. The people doing the looting knew that they would meet little resistance. “In reality, the English approach has not reduced violent crime. Instead it has left law-abiding citizens at the mercy of criminals who are confident that their victims have neither the means nor the legal right to resist them. Imitating this model would be a public safety disaster for the United States.”**** So what does the law abiding citizen do? He shops on Amazon.com for baseball bats! He can’t buy guns, so he gets the next best thing, a metal version of the Louisville Slugger. In a 24-hour period, sales for baseball bats on Amazon UK rose by more than 6000 percent.**** Defenseless citizens were also buying police-style telescoping truncheons. (The spring-loaded ones are illegal.) *The Guardian*<http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2011/aug/11/uk-riots-amazon-withdraws-truncheons>reported the following: “Amazon has removed several police-style telescopic truncheons from sale on its site as soaring sales of truncheons, baseball bats and other items that could be used as weapons sparked fears of vigilantism in the wake of widespread rioting.”**** So now, law-abiding citizens are even more defenseless. They can’t even order a baseball bat on line to protect themselves from roaming thugs. Maybe it’s time they whittle down their cricket bats. Criminals will always be able to acquire weapons of any description because they do not obey laws.
