Can you try with a serial comms program? I used Telix
from a dos partition to check the serial output was ok
and to change the output string to GPRMC. Minicom from
Linux or NetBSD is just a bit more difficult to use 
for changing settings but displays the output strings
ok. I also tried setting to binary which could be an
advantage for sub microsecond but for me their seemed
to be no improvement so it was changed back to GPRMC.
