Hi, it's been 2.5 years since I set up a NTP server in Turkey to reduce the effects of Turk Telekom's routers querying the pool NTP servers. I think this method has worked quite nicely, with the server serving some 1400-1500 packets/sec on average[1] for the last year. I was hoping that at some point Turk Telekom would reconfigure their routers to not query the pool, but alas, that has not happened.

When I set up that server, I was working for a company that used a vendor zone for pool.ntp.org, but I actually paid for the hosting cost of that server myself. It was easier that way, less bureaucracy.. I quit that job in mid-2010, but I continued paying the hosting costs for that server in 2011 and 2012. I'm a "poor student" nowadays, and I simply can't afford to pay the annual cost of $914.74 USD any more. So, quite frankly, it's all about the money.

I've paid for the server until the end of this year, but I'm not planning to renew the hosting for 2013. If Turk Telekom does nothing to their routers in the meantime, expect to see some NTP traffic spikes again in 2013.
