Hi David!
[]
Thank you for that suggestion.

I ordered one of the u-blox devices and am now the proud owner of My
First Stratum 1 Server (well, the second one, but the old serial DCF77
parse clock wasn't really accurate). It works fine so far, even with an
obscured view of the sky.

It doesn't have a static IP address, though, so it won't join the pool.
But I plan on building more of them.

I made a note of all the steps necessary to recreate your setup:
http://bd.hauke-lampe.de/raspberry-pi/raspberry-pi-stratum-1-ntp-server-with-pps-accurate-timekeeping-at-low-cost.html
- The most time-consuming parts were git checkouts and compiling the
kernel. Otherwise it was straight forward and easy.

Hauke.

Hauke,

What an excellent Web page! I've added a pointer from the end of my own page. I do wish I had your knowledge of rebuilding the kernel and adding the required GPIO modules. Perhaps one day I will try that on a near virgin SD card. At least experimenting isn't expensive! It is more time-consuming, though, on these low-powered cards.

I am most interested to see that your installation reports clk_jitter (in ntpq -c rv) which is non-zero. That's something I've been struggling with on my systems - https://support.ntp.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=2314. The text looks rather small on Firefox on Windows, by the way.

A great encouragement to others - and welcome to stratum-1 land!

Thanks,
David
