Just a thought, yesterday was Microsoft patch day. If MS added the pool to all the Windows clients out there, that could certainly account for this traffic.
To be clear, I have no actual evidence that's what's going on. Just a theory that happens to fit the facts. ________________________________________ From: Adam Jacobs Sent: Wednesday, December 14, 2016 16:57 To: Paul Gear; [email protected] Subject: Re: [Pool] Large increase in pool clients I am seeing the same EXACT thing, on my host here in the North America zone. Also set to 100Mbps. Dual-stack IPv4 and IPv6, my traffic has increased 10-fold in the past several days. It just got so bad, in fact, that the sheer number of udp connections was overloading my ASA 5510 firewall, and I've had to (temporarily, I hope) block off access to my server from the internet, in order to keep my firewall running properly. ________________________________________ From: pool <[email protected]> on behalf of Paul Gear <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, December 14, 2016 16:04 To: [email protected] Subject: [Pool] Large increase in pool clients Hi everyone, We've just been discussing in Freenode IRC #ntp a large increase in the number of pool clients that just popped up. My IPv6-only server set on low bandwidth in Australia was not impacted [1], but my IPv4-only servers set on 100 Mbps in UK/EU/global have seen a large increase in traffic [2], and about doubled in the number of unique clients per day over the last few hours. [3] No individual clients appear to be particularly problematic. (Or at least, not any more than usual.) Anyone know what might have caused this? Did we have some significant servers drop out of the pool, or has some OS update added a bunch of clients that weren't using the pool previously?
