As far as I have been able to determine, Messenger in Netscape 4.7x
requires the user to do a **manual** POP, then one can send messages for
e-mail accounts which require "POP before send". There is no provision for
an automatic POP/send. There is also no way to do "Enhanced" SMTP
authentication in Messenger but perhaps the newly beefed up programme in
Netscape 6 provides for this.
As far as Runbox is concerned, you're right - it does require a POP before
send. It has been working quite satisfactorily whenever I've tested it on
Port 26 but Mochamail's 2525 will not work, at least for me. It was
primarily for this that I abandoned Messenger; it simply does not have
sufficient flexibility when one is battling the limitations of many free
(and otherwise) ISP's.
Have you considered experimenting with a different e-mail client? Some
people swear by Pegasus since it will do just about anything short of
creating world peace and it's working on that; :>) besides, it's free.
Somewhat off the beaten track are Poco and Mail Warrior which have small
but devoted followings. At the paid end, are The Bat - if I can't get a new
e-mail account to work first in The Bat, I'm not going to get it working in
anything else - and my favourite, Calypso. (Even the shareware ones have at
least a 30 day trial.) Just a thought.
I have noticed a number of posters whose interests overlap and who belong
to some of the same mailing lists. Always nice to see a familiar e-mail
address, JM.
