This whole discussion thread - along with the Douglas Coupland one - is an
eerily timeful reminder of popjourno's upcoming first birthday in April. If
I recall correctly, discussing the merits of 'Girlfriend in a Coma' was one
of the inaugural plot lines for this list... And now it seems to have come
full circle.
For the birthday do, I'll be thinking of a competition slash giveaway, with
some nice freebies for folks to obtain, fully free of charge, naturally. If
anyone has any suggestions, do let me know. I already have a few choice
goodies to send your way.
Also, this 'indie pop' versus 'mainstream pop' thread (maybe not the best of
titles, but close enough) reminds me of the Backstreet Boys/Britney Spears
discussion we had a while back. Is there anyone else that feels strongly
about this (to include film, art, books, etc.), and are we being elitist
when we listen to bands that only a handul of people can buy? Records which
are pressed in a dank basement somewhere in Hoboken, New Jersey, and have
catalogue numbers such as DISC 001 or 002...
