In Boston, it means that Mod Night -- at least the Mod Night I've
gone to several times -- sports a DJ who plays the same freakin'
songs week after week while they project the same freakin' episode of
"Hullaballoo" on the wall. Gets tiresome. Was a real freak scene
dancing the first time I went, but now it's a mix of the same insular
insiders, newcomers every week, and the same environment, which
becomes deadening.
'Course the punk scene isn't much different, I'd wager. Went to an
all-ages show Saturday afternoon to see the Explosion (highly
recommended! Nice EP on Jade Tree), Scared of Chaka, Dillinger 4, and
Discount. Luckily, I wasn't the oldest person there, but like most
all-ages shows I check, I recognized a lot of people but didn't know
anyone.
Folks here might be interested in the second release on Unstoppable
Records, the label that put out the Anchormen's first CD (I sing in
the Anchormen). Paul Coleman's Sinkcharmer project features his home
recordings, mostly short, personal, lo-fi pop tunes with neat use of
electronics. The new CD is called "Breaking the Slide Rule" and
includes something like 20 songs. Check out
http://www.sinkcharmer.com/goods.html for some sound samples and more
info goodies. Sinkcharmer's part of the Handstand Command collective
-- http://handstandcommand.tripod.com. He and Kathleen bought a house
in Quincy not too long ago. Does that make him a Quincy Punk?
