than the indiepop list..
In one of his excellent essays sometimes resembling music reviews
(http://furia.com/twas/index.html -- read the one on ABBA live!), Glenn
McDonald reminded me of how sad it is that we rarely experience recorded
music in the presence of many others and with the attention we do with
films in theaters. About the closest thing that resembled this for me
lately is when I saw the remastered "Yellow Submarine" in the
theatre. The animation and story *was* entertaining, but the songs seemed
to beautifully drown out even the idea that I was watching a film, and,
probably I was off, but I sensed like the audience felt the same
way. Maybe they, too, would've enjoyed it even if the projector light was
out and the songs all ran together.. Also, although I missed it,
apparently there was a big listening party for the Flaming Lips'
"Zaireeka" (sp?) when it came out in Tallahassee in full octophonic
sound.
Starting something like an "album theater" or something, at first
there might be an issue of what to play, but I don't think it would be
such a problem considering people pay almost ten dollars to see movies
they've never even see before, and theaters all over still run older
and classic films. With settings like that, the general public might
finally give pop albums the undivided attention they deserve.
