Good point about the artwork. The singlemost worrying thing about the whole
MP3 thing is that there is no substance to the content, other than the
music. CDs were supposed to be the death of vinyl, but still there are large
sections devoted to 7" and 12" releases in HMV. Of all places. If music is
to become a cell within a memory stick, then I don't want to be a part of
it. Music, in its purest form, is art.
Associated with this is the commodity, which of course the majors tap into,
but like vinyl, 'hard' copy of music will never die. Hugging a 12" is great,
hugging an MP3 is an impossibility. Clarity is lost in the void between
reality and electronic embesilment. Napster gave people the opportunity to
cross the realm; the try before you buy ethic. Sadly for the meantime, this
has now gone. MP3 (or other digital music) will never replace the
traditional 'real' music products. And if, by an unlucky strike of
misfortune it does, the world will be a far sadder place for it.
