Dear List,

I do have a problem with running the vncserver from the vanilla tightvnc-1.3.10p0 package provided with OpenBSD 4.9.

When I run tightvnc server using 'vncserver :1', vncviewer can connect, but I get a black screen without any application.

The following is the content of the .vnc/host:1.log file:

-----------------------
24/06/11 18:11:09 Xvnc version TightVNC-1.3.10

24/06/11 18:11:09 Desktop name 'X' (host:1)

-----------------------

(hostname replaced by 'host' to protect the innocent)

The vnc server is running and I can connect to it with a vncviewer, but as all applications crash the screen remains black.

Here is the content of the xstartup file:

-----------------------
$ cat .vnc/xstartup
#!/bin/sh

xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
#xsetroot -solid grey
xterm -geometry 80x24+10+10 -ls -title "$VNCDESKTOP Desktop" &
twm &
-----------------------

The 'X Error' originates from the 'xterm', while the 'twm' errors originate from twm. (I commented out the xsetroot, but that was just during experimenting and did not change anything).

- The installation is a full OpenBSD 4.9.
- Results do not change when I try running as root or as regular user.
- There is no other vncserver or a regular X server running.
- machdep.allowaperture is set to 2.

When I redirect 'env' to a file during startup, it contains the following (IPs censored):

-----------------------
SSH_CONNECTION=XX.XX.XX.XX XXXXX XX.XX.XX.XX XX
PATH=/home/schoelle/bin:/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/games:.
SHELL=/bin/ksh
USER=schoelle
MAIL=/var/mail/schoelle
HOME=/home/schoelle
DISPLAY=:1
SSH_CLIENT=XX.XX.XX.XX XXXXX XX
VNCDESKTOP=X
XAUTHORITY=/home/schoelle/.Xauthority
TERM=xterm
_=/usr/local/bin/vncserver
SSH_TTY=/dev/ttyp1
LOGNAME=schoelle
-----------------------

I am stuck. Any hints of further steps and experiments are welcome.

Thanks,
Bernd
