Basically, there are 2 ways to record CDs - Track At Once (TAO) or Disk At
Once (DAO). If you record using the DAO method, then you can control the
gap between tracks, setting it to 0 if you don't want silence between
tracks. I believe some early CD recorders didn't allow you to record DAO,
but I doubt there are any that don't do it now. Also, some software doesn't
allow for full control of the gap length. The version of Easy CD Creator
that I use allows only 2 or 0 seconds for the gap, depending on whether the
disc was recorded TAO or DAO. Nero, however, lets me set it to whatever I
want, down to increments of 1 frame, the smallest division on a CD (75
frames = 1 second). As for you question about CDROM drives, being able to
play an audio CD does not indicate that it will extract audio well (or at
all). How well and how quickly a drive does DAE is something that varies
widely. Plextors are considered among the best, but are also the most
expensive.
