I agree that conversion is a lot of work. I've done most of it, and
am still nervous
about switching on SC, since it will undoubtrably break some details
I've missed.

First: is the main and only point of standard config to make possible
the exchange of scripts in a common format? Is there any othe
rationale for it?

If it's so that it's only to facilitate script exchange, that doesn't
necessarily mean _all_ scripts have to be in standard config. Only
ones that one wants to share.

What would be the chance of either

(a) a mode that could be entered at the beginning of a script (a cl
service??) that would temporarily turn on standard configuration (for
that script only, or until another service turns off SC, or reverts
to configuration before SC was turned on)That would imply that there
was sme way of saving existing configuration so it could be set back.

or

(b) how about scriptable ways of controlling the various config
features that make up the SC, e.g.

   config.setEscChar("\")
   config.setExpStartsChar("&")
     ....
which could then be used to reset config properties at end of script.

or

(c) failing that, how possible would a script be that would check
other scripts to see if they conformed to SC? E.g. a script that
contains no 'n, '" or other escape sequences with single
quote probably will work in SC. Such a script would have to be
manually converted to non-SC by those not using it. I haven't
thought out pitfalls, might not be possible.
